Today marks the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 events. Our hearts go out to the nation and the families of those we lost and we honor those who continue to protect our freedom. We will always be thankful for the brave men and women who risked their lives for those of others – your bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered.

President Barack Obama proclaimed today, 11 September 2014, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance for those who were injured or died during the attacks in 2001. He also directed that the American flag should be displayed on homes, the White House and all US government buildings throughout the world. To commemorate the lives lost on 9/11 the US flag should fly at half-staff from sunrise till sunset. If it is fixed, you should place a black mourning ribbon on top of the pole. The use of the flag on the day is to symbolize that America survived and still remains strong after these terrorist attacks.

It has also become customary to hold a moment of silence for the victims of this tragedy at 8:46 AM as this marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. People who personally suffered due to the loss of a loved one also go to visit memorials and lay flowers.

Events surrounding the 13 year anniversary for 9/11:

• Today, for the first time, the fences around the National September 11 Museum will come down and the area opened up to the public.

• At 6 PM the Memorial plaza will be open to the public to view the Tribute in Light that will illuminate the New York City sky just south of the memorial site and will be open until midnight.

• Family members of victims will gather to read to names of the deceased with pauses for each plane and each tower.

• Some individuals and communities also choose to carry out an act of service on this day to make a difference.
