1. Be flexible

It might sound strange to say plan exactly what you want to cook but still be flexible. However, when you hit the shops to buy supplies, you might find that the items on your list are far more expensive than items that could also work in your meal plan.

This is why it’s important to be flexible and to be able to alter your menu slightly while on the go. For example, if you find that the smoked salmon pate you want for your starter is going to go over your budget before you even begin cooking, don’t despair. Of course, it’s much simpler to buy things like sauces and gravy because that saves a lot of time. However, it’s often the little things that add up when bought readymade. Rather get the ingredients and rope in a friend or family member to help make them up from scratch. A basic gravy is very easy to mix up and with an extra pair of hands in the kitchen, you won’t have to worry about time.

3. Decorate the Christmas cake yourself

The price difference between a plain Christmas cake and one with fancy decorations on it can be enormous. If you go for the plain option and buy some ready-to-roll icing, marzipan and jam, you’ll most likely save money. Additionally, you can turn the Christmas cake into a fun group project. If you have kids, challenge them to make fun decorations out of icing to go on top of the cake.

4. Don’t skimp on the turkey

This is the centerpiece of your Christmas lunch and should be the one thing on the table that everyone wants seconds from. While you don’t have to buy the biggest and most expensive bird, it’s always recommended that you get the best that you can afford.

With the right turkey, your Christmas lunch is almost guaranteed to be a hit – even if you are on a tight budget.
